Our Team

The people behind the research at the Integrative Human-Environment Dynamics Lab, working across ecological science, social theory, field research, and systems approaches.

Interdisciplinary collaboration is central to understanding complex human-environment systems.

The People Behind the Research

Different perspectives. One shared focus.

The IHED Lab brings together researchers and students interested in the dynamic relationships between people, natural resources, and environmental systems. Our work draws on multiple disciplines and approaches to investigate sustainability, resilience, natural-resource management, and the human dimensions of environmental change.Together, we seek to develop knowledge that can contribute to inclusive and sustainable solutions across local and global contexts.

01 · LAB LEADERSHIP

Dr. Suraj Upadhaya

Director · Integrative Human-Environment Dynamics Lab

Dr. Suraj Upadhaya leads the Integrative Human-Environment Dynamics Lab at Kentucky State University. His work through the IHED Lab focuses on the dynamic relationship between natural resources and people, with an emphasis on sustainability, resilience, and the human dimensions of environmental systems. The lab's research brings together ecological science, social theory, field research, and systems modeling to examine complex socio-ecological challenges.

  • Sustainability and resilience of socio-ecological systems
  • Land use and land cover change
  • Ecosystem services
  • Sustainable and regenerative agriculture
  • Natural-resource governance and water resources
  • Environmental equity and marginalized communities

Working Across Disciplines

Research happens across boundaries.

Understanding sustainability challenges requires more than a single disciplinary perspective. The IHED Lab connects different ways of thinking, observing, and analyzing environmental systems. This interdisciplinary approach allows researchers to examine relationships between ecological processes, human decisions, institutions, and communities.

  • Ecological science
  • Social theory and human dimensions
  • Field research
  • Geospatial and landscape analysis
  • Systems modeling
  • Community-based research
